Uterine Prolapse Cystocele Rectocele

Uterine Prolapse Cystocele RectoceleThe major contributing factor to these conditions are
*Diastasis recti, or separation of the abdominal muscles (a common side effect of pregnancy, where the growth of the fetus causes the abdominal muscles to separate down the middle). In 60% of women this heals on its own -- but as many as 40% of women experience increasing problems due to the failure to heal. Without the internal support of strong, ‘whole’ abdominal muscles, internal pelvic organs may eventually ‘fall or collapse’.
**Loss of muscle tone related to aging and menopause

What are these conditions?
A variety of muscles in the pelvic floor combine to support the internal pelvic organs, including the uterus and the vagina. In effect these muscles, through their strength and tone, hold these organs in their proper place. The names for these conditions relate to which area of the uterus and/or vagina is affected.

Uterine Prolapse - means that the uterus is falling into (prolapsing) the vagina.
Cystocele - (pronounced ‘sisto-seal’) when the front wall of the vagina, below the bladder is prolapsing (the bladder is bulging into the vaginal wall)
Recotcele - (pronounced ‘recto-seal’) - when the back wall of the vagina (in front of the bowel) is prolapsing - meaning the bowel or rectal wall is pushing into the wall of the vagina.
If you do your own web research on these topics --as you obviously are -- we know that you will consistently see that kegel exercises are cited as the Number 1 method to prevent these conditions by strengthening the pelvic floor muscles to prevent such prolapse.
Most physicians and therapists will advise that it is much more difficult to manage or correct a prolapse with exercise, once it is an established condition, however for mild conditions kegel exercises may help improve symptoms.
Other treatments include:
**Biofeedback therapy - this is the use of special measuring devices, placed in the vagina, to help measure the strength of your contractions of the PC (pubococcygeal) muscles. (These are the same muscles that are isolated and utilized in successful kegel exercises using the Kegelmaster)
** Pessary Ring -- this is a ring-like structure placed in the upper area of the vagina, by your physician, to provide support to the muscles and pelvic organs. Many women find this device will minimize the discomfort of the prolapse and minimize incontinence problems. Pessaries must be removed regularly and cleaned. Some women are comfortable doing this themselves, others find it too difficult and choose to visit their physicians regularly.
**Surgical Options - there are a variety of surgical options depending upon your condition and its severity. These are best discussed with your physician to determine if they are the right option for you.
